       Nine of them came here. They look like us. They talk like us. They live among us, but they are not us. They came here with powers we find extraordinary, to escape the doomed fate of a planet.        When Jacob's grandfather Abe dies unexpectedly and Jacob begins to find clues that there was more at hand than a rabid dog. After Abe's death Jacob finds a collection of photographs that depict people performing supernatural feats. Jacob finds letters that his grandfather had gotten from an orphanage in Whales mailed from someone called Miss Peregrine. Jacob journeys to the remote island off of Whales and discovers the ruins of Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children. Jacob explores the abandoned orphanage, looking for evidence that his grandfather had stayed there, anything at all to show him that he had not wasted his time. Jacob hears disturbances in the house, floorboards creaking and doors swinging, he begins to think that the house is not as abandoned as he thought.

When the body just vanishes Clary has more than a few questions.  Clary becomes immersed with the Shadowhunters a group of warriors who force demons from Earth and back to where they came from. When Clary becomes a target her mother disappears and Clary is attacked by a gruesome demon. She begins to question whether she should hang out with a group of demon fighting adolescents. When Clary not only survives, but suddenly gains the ability to see demons and is able to kill the grotesquerie, the Shadowhunters begin to question what she is.
