When Jacob's grandfather Abe dies unexpectedly and Jacob begins to find clues that there was more at hand than a rabid dog. After Abe's death Jacob finds a collection of photographs that depict people performing supernatural feats. Jacob finds letters that his grandfather had gotten from an orphanage in Whales mailed from someone called Miss Peregrine. Jacob journeys to the remote island off of Whales and discovers the ruins of Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children. Jacob explores the abandoned orphanage, looking for evidence that his grandfather had stayed there, anything at all to show him that he had not wasted his time. Jacob hears disturbances in the house, floorboards creaking and doors swinging, he begins to think that the house is not as abandoned as he thought.
