Tod is the last boy in Prentisstown, a very small settlement on New World. Tod has grown up believing Prentisstown's history, learning that all the women are dead because of the "germ" and it left the men able to hear each others thoughts, what they call the "noise". Tod's adoptive parents have been planning his escape from Prentisstown for 11 years. When he tells them of a place where the noise is silent, they force him to leave. Tod follows his map through the swamps, but is ambushed by the town priest Aaron. When Tod escapes he finds the girl that was the source of silence, she does not talk, but leads him to a spaceship crash-site which contains her dead parents. After she shows him the crash-site they begin they're journey to find a settlement.
